The toll from a one man attack in Belgium is at least five dead - including the gunman - and more than 120 injured.

Police told the panicked crowd to run to safety, but no one knew where was safe.

A gunman had thrown at least three grenades from a rooftop in the Belgian city of Liege, and then opened fire with a rifle.

“I saw smoke and I heard gunshots also,” says witness Dimitri Degryse.

“A lot of people [were] on the floor between the glass, also a white sheet with somebody under it that was dead.”

Two teenagers and a pensioner were among those killed.

The gunman, 33-year-old Nordine Amrani, was also found dead. He is believed to have turned the gun on himself.

Amrani had a long criminal record for drugs and illegal weapons. He had been sentenced to five years in jail but was released after two.

Police say Amrani had been due to report to them again for questioning when he launched the attack, terrorising those in the market which was crammed with children and Christmas shoppers.
