New Zealand's first commercial foray into the final frontier is a step closer to lift-off.

The Atea 1 rocket left from its base in central Auckland this morning, on a journey to the launch spot on Great Mercury Island - near Coromandel.

Its payload is mostly scientific, but it also contains thousands of messages to be sent into outer space.
