3News - The bus adverts created a storm when they ran on British buses earlier this year

Atheist bus message - encouraging conversation or hatred?

An atheist group is looking to run a campaign on New Zealand buses with the slogan “There is probably no God. So stop worrying and enjoy your life.” Does the campaign foster insightful debate into religion or is the message a slanted anti-faith campaign.

To all those quibbling at the word "probably", you should understand that the atheist campaigners use the word technically. Any skeptical thinker understands that it's impossible to prove a negative. But I can say "I probably won't win the lotto three times in a row". This doesn't mean that I think the odds are 50-50, or that I actually WILL win. It's just skeptical thinkers being rigorous - it doesn't mean they lack the courage of their convictions. If atheists say "definitely" then they generally get castigated for claiming to be able to prove a negative! Talk about heads-you-lose!

It's sad to know that when people deny the existence of God, say something bad about a religion, or portray whatever negative about a faith, it attracts hatred and violence no matter what religion. This "atheist bus message" campaign may disgust some people. Another example was the billboard which portrayed Jesus, which attracted vandalism. I thought religion teaches people to be forgiving, be more tolerant. Why the hatred and violence? It only leads to more non-believers to appear.

Religion??? The only thing I'm religious about is not missing the a V8 Supercar race. As for the comment... "There is probably no God. So stop worrying and enjoy your life" I agree, there probably isn't & I am, thank you. Also I think the campaign should only foster insightful debate not hatred, but hundreds of thousands of people have died in wars over religion previously, so why should they change now? Religious fanatics will always want to convert or kill those that don't agree with 'their' religion.

I think that this kind of advertising is a good thing it will get people thinking and asking questions about life. I believe we are witnessing the global attack on ALL religion! www.False-Religion.com

So Dieter, your plan is to rely on people's fear of death to get them to cast aside rationality and logic?

leave your religious beliefs at home where they belong & don't impose them upon another's free will. Oh & you don't offend ether that way. thats how i as a hindu get around in this mostly christian country, & will encourage me kids be as-like once they are old enough to make an informed decision on which religion (if any) is right according to their free will.

'The fool says in his heart there is no God.' What is so amazing, the energy those disciples of Dawkins exert to fight a God they don't even believe exists! (They bother putting on boxing gloves to punch holes into thin air!) There is GOD, always has been and always will be! I'd like to talk to Mr. Fisher on his deathbed about this matter. Maybe then he changes his mind?

Check out this load of bollocks on the matter: http://talk.thinkingmatters.org.nz/2009/theres-probably-no-god-now-stop-worrying-and-enjoy-your-life/ My response: “if God is absent there is ultimately no moral accountability and no life after death.” – oh please – what arrogant rubbish. *rolls eyes* The accountability is to the other people we connect with during our lives and leave behind afterwards. Trying to make atheists out as sociopaths is getting very old, and smacks of desperation and ignorance of basic ‘101' level social psychology. How pathetic… Also - am I the only one who finds people who feel they need a god to behave a bit scary?

Religion is a load of crap. How can people beleive that there's a man sitting on a cloud watching ever single thing in the world at every second. And that thsi almighty person has created everything in the universe 6000 years ago!!!

GREAT. Good to see freedom of speech being practiced by atheists. All you "godly" people get a grip and step up into the real world.
