Auckland bus drivers rejected the pay-rise offer today

By Jerram Watts

Auckland bus drivers have rejected the pay rise offer from their employer, NZ Bus, meaning negotiations for a new Combined Employment Agreement will continue.

Bus drivers and cleaners for Metrolink, GO WEST, Waka Pacific, Link, City Circuit Buses and North star rejected a three-year, 11.5 percent raise offer today (4.2 percent, 4.0 percent and 3.3 percent respectively).

Drivers currently earn between $14.05 and $16.75 an hour depending on how long they have been working for.

The 11.5 percent offer amounted to a $2 an hour increase over three years.

NZ Bus and unions representing about 900 drivers and cleaners reached an agreement last Friday and put the offer to members today - which they promptly declined.

NZ Bus general manager Zane Fulljames says the drivers' decision "beggars belief".

"It is immensely disappointing to our customers, our people and the business."

Mr Fulljames says NZ Bus will now take some time to consider its position.

NZ Bus are the largest bus company in Auckland, with a fleet of 656 buses covering more than 90 routes.

Bus services were disrupted today between 10am and 1:30pm when the drivers and cleaners met with their employers.

However, this was a small disruption compared to the tens of thousands of commuters who were affected for several days by the lock-out last month.

The negotiations which have lasted for months now look set to continue with no end in sight.

NZ Bus is soft. The majority of their drivers are near or past retirement age, there are plenty of people out there desperate for the jobs they clearly don't want. Move them on and develop a decent recruitment program. The public are sick & tired of being held to ransom by a group who's only genuine skill is pushing D - for drive and remembering to close the back door!

Ritchies drivers get paid less, yet seem happy with their deal, and NZ Bus drivers apparently hate their guts. Being a bus driver is not the most skilled job in the world, despite what some of those complaining might tell you.

Remember that inflation is often at around 3%, so a 3% pay rise each year is necessary just to stay the same

Thats a pretty decent deal well above what inflation will sit at for the next 3 years. If they want more money they should look for a different job.

Wow and the Police got 2% and even then only after they went to arbitration. I have sympathy for you guys but it might be time to get real and I cannot believe you turned it down. Lots of folks would like your jobs even though the pay is sucky...... it is better than no pay. The recession is not over!

plenty of people looking for jobs, start sacking the employees instead of letting them hold the company to ransom.

Good on the workers. How much salary do the managers get?The workers should ask for 4% for each year.Maybe the workers have seen through the controlled unions and do not want to suffer from drapetomania!!!!Maybe wages should match house price rises and cost of living.Looks like the NON-PRODUCTIVE sector(management, lawyers, accountants, economists, academics etc) will have to use a different type of action.(propaganda and statistics work only for so long).Maybe when the productive sector start getting the financial benefits the economy might improve

Probably time for the company to decide if it wants to continue with this nonsense. Give it back to Labour's ARC and let Lee start to earn his salary.

Best solution is another strike. Paralize the services, the management gets a shafting from city council, they agree to a decent wage rise for you folks. You get what you want, city gets what they want, the management can go suck eggs.
