Police are investigating a fire in South Auckland overnight which began after a liquor store was rammed with a car.

It’s not known whether the blaze was caused by the crash, or arson.

The car's occupants escaped on foot.

“It got away,” says Counties Manukau senior sergeant Mark Rowbottom.

The blaze gutted the building, and police are now appealing for witnesses.
