An Auckland man is behind bars after he was found guilty of possessing more than 350 images of boys as young as six engaged in sexual acts or poses.

Lyle Allen Price, 39, a former hotel supervisor at Mangere Bridge, pleaded guilty to 20 charges of representation possession in the Auckland District Court.

Judge Phil Gittos sentenced Price, who has previous sexual convictions, to 14 months jail on Thursday.

A spokesman for the Department of Internal Affairs says American authorities helped in identifying Price.

"The USA's National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children told Internal Affairs that a New Zealand registered electronic address had uploaded objectionable images to an online platform," a statement read.

Subsequent investigations by the New Zealand department led to the seizure of Price's computers where the images of boys aged 6-13 years were stored.

Internal Affairs' general manager for regulatory and compliance operations, Maarten Quivooy issued this warning: "People who think they're safe in the confines of their own home indulging in this objectionable practices on the internet should think again."
