Hundreds of Auckland patients have had their elective surgery cancelled, as radiographers prepare to walk off the job today.
National strikes are occurring in hospitals up and down the country starting Tuesday, but Auckland has a head start - with disgruntled employees stopping work at 8am today.
Talks between the APEX union and district health boards stalled after more than three hours of negotiations yesterday.
Auckland DHB spokesman Mark Fenwick says they've had to tell 500 people in Auckland alone that their operation won't be going ahead any time soon.
The union has agreed to a 1 percent pay rise with another 1 percent to follow at a later date, but there's been little progress on talks around other conditions, such as backdating pay.
