Police are asking the public for information after the attempted abduction of a young woman in Manukau this morning.

The 15-year-old was walking to school at around 9.40am, taking her usual route through Salford Place in Flatbush, when a red vehicle pulled up behind her.

When the driver called out, “It's a bit late to be going to school isn't it?” the girl ignored him and began to walk faster.

She then heard car doors closing, felt her arms being grabbed, and saw a pair of legs on either side of her. She swung her art folder at the offenders, hitting one of them in the face, then ran back to her house.

As she ran home the woman heard one of the offenders say, “Come on, let’s just go”.

Detective Sergeant Mal Hassall says members of the public are advised “to always walk in pairs and to walk along busy, well lit streets”.

He says police will be patrolling the area.

Police want to speak to anyone with information about the offenders or the car they were in at the time of the incident.

The first offender was described as a Maori or Pacific Islander, mid-20s, solid build and medium height. He was wearing dark jandals, a black t-shirt and three-quarter length shorts, and had short black ‘afro’ hair.

The second offender was also a Maori or Pacific Islander, tall and skinny, mid-20s, and had dreadlocks or braided hair. He was wearing black canvas shoes and sunglasses.

The car was bright red with a plastic strip around it, had a smashed quarter light on the drivers’ side, and a large dent in the rear passenger door. The registration number contained a B and a 6.

Anyone with information  is encouraged to call Otara CIB immediately on 09 261 1300 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I will never understand journalists. We constantly get a barrage of 18 year old men being called boys (what ever happened to the term youth?), and yet here they are calling an 15 year old girl a young woman. I find that highly inappropriate.

Good thing the girl was able to fight back as we can see how useful our cops are huh? About as useful as a 3rd teat; our police are really a joke in this country as they are unable to protect anyone at all. The amount of crime that goes unchecked from vandalism, theft, roadrage incidents is absolutely amazing. And yeah, I'm sure they are going to catch these guys. Makes you feel really safe, doesn't it?
