Nosh hopes bigger retailers will follow their lead

A food market is cutting the price of milk at its six stores in a move it hopes will see bigger retailers follow suit.

Nosh Food Market will drop the price of a two litre bottle to $2 from its usual price of $4.49 at its stores in Auckland, Matakana and Hamilton.

Director Clinton Beuvink says the move was prompted after he became aware the rising price of milk was stopping people drinking it and were replacing by other options.

"Milk is good for growing families and it’s a shame it costs more than soft drinks and other less healthy beverages that have little redeeming value and are often chock-full of sugar," he said.

Mr Beuvnik admits the move is a token gesture but says bigger retailers should also follow their lead.

"We simply do not have the grunt of the big grocery chains in New Zealand but that doesn't mean we can’t make a stand on something we believe in. I urge the major chains take up the challenge."

A Government proposal released last month will make dominant milk producer Fonterra disclose more details about how it sets the price of milk.

@ James, How long have you been working for Fonterra ??
Good on "Nosh" if they had a store near me I would support them for just taking a stand against all the greedy giants out there. Come on supermarkets, you rob us on other stuff how about lowering the price of milk for the kids.

milk is alot cheaper than your standard 600ml bottle of coke or fanta or lemonade, they price at $3.80 so for 2litres you pay over 10 dollars so how much is 2 litres of milk? and coke cans are average $2.00 now thats over $12.00 for 2litres, milk is actually quite cheap everybody just wants something for nothing.

Milk in NZ is more expensive than in most counties. I have checked. I used to be a dairy farmer in another country.

Why is milk never on special in the supermarkets? There is always some sort of alcohol on special in the supermarkets - why not milk? Chips & soft drinks, there is always an option on special - why not milk? Practically everything else in a supermarket gets a chance at being on special - why not milk? Supermarkets in other countries use milk as a loss leader to get customers in the door, but here in New Zealand the supermarkets use booze and chips and soft drinks to lure people in the door - why not milk? The supermarkets in this country have a lot to answer for.
