A food market is cutting the price of milk at its six stores in a move it hopes will see bigger retailers follow suit.
Nosh Food Market will drop the price of a two litre bottle to $2 from its usual price of $4.49 at its stores in Auckland, Matakana and Hamilton.
Director Clinton Beuvink says the move was prompted after he became aware the rising price of milk was stopping people drinking it and were replacing by other options.
"Milk is good for growing families and it’s a shame it costs more than soft drinks and other less healthy beverages that have little redeeming value and are often chock-full of sugar," he said.
Mr Beuvnik admits the move is a token gesture but says bigger retailers should also follow their lead.
"We simply do not have the grunt of the big grocery chains in New Zealand but that doesn't mean we can’t make a stand on something we believe in. I urge the major chains take up the challenge."
A Government proposal released last month will make dominant milk producer Fonterra disclose more details about how it sets the price of milk.
