Police are appealing for witnesses following the armed robbery of a south Auckland supermarket.

A sawn-off air rifle was pointed at the shopkeeper in the robbery of Jay's Supermarket in Manurewa about 4.30pm on Thursday when two men demanded cash.

They made off with the cash tray from the till and got into a getaway car, which was described as a black, two-door vehicle.

Later the two men were seen leaving Cambridge Rd in a car also described as a black, two-door vehicle, where they had just dumped a stolen Mitsubishi Legnum.

Police found the air rifle and cash tray in the Legnum.

The two cars were seen racing each other earlier in the day, before the supermarket was robbed.

"Witnesses reported the black car's number plate to be similar to UF8125, but they weren't 100 per cent positive," said Detective Sergeant Eddie Sutherland.
