An Auckland woman says it is about time women felt comfortable enough with their bodies to go topless on public beaches, launching a Facebook facampaign to encourage women to bare their breasts.

Shannon Claire says male toplessness being okay, but female toplessness not, is a double standard.

Ms Claire says it’s time for us to follow European beaches into the light.

The 31-year-old has been sunbathing topless since she was 14-years-old. She says she is totally comfortable with her body, but this summer, Ms Claire has been copping flak from others who are not.

Instead of covering up, she has decided to take a stand, by starting a campaign for women to join her topless revolution.

But Family First New Zealand says there is no place for topless sunbathing on public beaches, and that it should be banned.

Have any of the people who suggest that a woman's breast should be kept hidden from children ever considered why women have breasts in the first place? Good on you, Shannon!

Think of this, guys: Is anything going to excite you on women when nothing is going to be hidden any more?

Ha ha ive just read the Muslim drivvel on the posts. Mohammad would be ashamed of your ignorance. Like most other respectful immigrants I have done my best to adapt to the culture of this most beautiful country. People like you bring shame on the rest of us and my advice be to immediately respect your interpretation of the teachings and head back to where you came from before you cause any more trouble with your intolerance.

It is quite legal in the State of New South Wales in Australia to Sunbake and Swim Topless at any Beach for any women. There are some nude beaches in New South Wales also. However I believe this is illegal to sunbake Topless for Women in Queensland and the Northern Terrority in Australia. However this does not stop some local and European Women to do it anyway. It seems that the Ultra Right Wing Religious groups want to get on their high horse about this matter. Maybe Shannon Claire should make a big issue on this matter on the Gold Coast in Queensland at Surfers Paradise Beach on a busy Summers Day during the Christmas School Holidays to upset the local Gold Coast City Council and Queensland Government and see if this stirs up Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.

I think kids should not be misused as "arguments" in this context. Kids are handling it as absolutely normal that mommy or another woman is topless at the beach when it IS normal that mommy and other women are topless at the beach - and teenagers are reacting only as it is normal in their age, too. I´m German and common with the European style of toplessness - I´m practising it since round about twenty years, I didn´t used now a bikini-top while sunbathing and swimming since 13 years - and I´m a roman-catholic Christ, too. The bible is saying at no point: "Cover up your boobs at the beach!" Even the pope is allowing officially toplessness. So what? Please, let the Christian religion out of the game, too!!! You can see not only single women but also females with their girlfriends and boyfriends, married women with their hubbies and mommies with their children nearly at every European beach topless. When my mommy and I are together at a beach we both are always topless. Okay, sometimes somebody is looking. What´s about it? Let him look! Btw: I think it´s at least more silly to wear black clothes from the head down to the feets at a sunny summerday at the beach than being topless their. Love, Nicola

Kids are never the problem, because body-phobia is something that's learned, not inherited. Topfreedom should be equally available to both genders. The people who want to keep it 'the way it is' are no different than the ones in the past who declared that the miniskirt and the bikini would destroy the Earth. As we leave repression of the human body behind,we grow and mature as a people. Topfreedom forever, and let's move on.

Good move, physical freedom is a pleasure, clothing fashion is a perversion, sweet. Good on you, that woman.

It is disturbing to see that people like "Austin" and "Gharda" have children. To consider any part of the human body 'ugly' is both insane and discriminatory. Perhaps they have their own warped sexual dysfunctions.

Boobs AND nipples -- if they are so very objectionable and offensive, why are men allowed to go topless? Men DO have nipples, you know. If it's about "protecting the children", as so many people claim (and the majority of those people happen to be "Christian"), how about explaining to those children WHY male nipples are "ok" but female nipples are not? Growing up believing that your own body is "dirty" or "disgusting" is far more harmful than seeing a bare female breast and/or nipple. But I really love the comment from that "Family First NZ" woman, about expressing one's individuality: it's apparently ok to be an individual in private -- but when in public you must be a clone, conforming to what everyone else is doing, wearing, saying, eating, thinking -- and I assume believing. So much for being able to express individuality. Hey, lady, it was your God who made your body -- yet you see it as "ugly" and something to be ashamed of..... "Western" Society: still every bit as REPRESSIVE as any other society in the World.
