International visitor numbers were up in April, despite a decline in traffic from Japan following the March earthquake.

Figures from Auckland Airport today show total international passenger numbers were up 6.8 percent over the last month.

When compared with April 2010, international passenger numbers were up by more than 28,000. More than 570,000 international passengers passed through Auckland Airport last month.

Jetstar Asia completed its first full month of service, contributing to a 40.1 percent increase in traffic from Singapore.

Arrivals from the UK and Germany were up 20.4 percent on the same period last year, when traffic was impacted by the Icelandic volcanic ash.

Meanwhile, domestic passenger figures for April were relatively unchanged from the same period last year.

Air New Zealand and Jetstar passenger numbers were up, while seat capacity decreased by 2.3 percent.
