Two passenger trams were delivered to Auckland this morning more than 50 years after the city shut down its tram network.

They've been brought over for the Rugby World Cup, and there are some ambitious plans for their use after that.

The trams, leased from a Melbourne museum, will be used to ferry passengers for the cup around the newly-renovated waterfront in a 15-minute circuit.

Ratepayers are funding the project.

The trams will be ready for use in August.

Possibly an inner city tram loop for about $150 million would be more realistic than the rail tunnels. The route from Britomart- Queen St, Upper Queen St, Kyber pass and Down Symonds street to the University and Britomart with a link to the tram lines there putting down in the tank farm and the Upper viaduct. With 10 new trams there should be a five minute interval service on the single line whcih would be less disruptive installing.

Auckland Rate Payers are really being suckered in leasing Trams from Melbourne when there are a number just up the road in Motat or Queen Elizibeth Park Wellington or even from Christchurch. Seems to be a copycat of Christchurch though as well

What is the point of spending all that money on something that only goes for a 15 minute circuit. If it included transport to and from Eden park I could understand. Why are we funding this. I hope people riding on it will be charged.
