Aussie PM Kevin Rudd donned an All Blacks tie today - honouring his bet with John Key after the Wallabies fell to the ABs on Saturday
Mon, 24 Aug 2009 12:00a.m.
By Amanda Gillies
With the country in mourning, it is only fitting its leader wore black.
An All Black tie – that is – forced around Kevin Rudd’s neck by our own Prime Minister John Key, for officially being a loser.
They lost the Bledisloe Cup to the All Blacks, then the Ashes to England, and this afternoon came the final humiliation – they lost Miss Universe too.
It started off well for the Australians. On Saturday night in Sydney before 80,000 fans the Wallabies lead the All Blacks for 78 minutes. Then Dan Carter put the boot in, and the All Blacks won by a single point.
“Blediswoe”, the critics later cried. But let’s not forget – the Wallabies have lost 14 of the last 17 Bledisloe Cup matches, so Australia is used to losing to the All Blacks.
However, their cricketers lost the Ashes to the Poms – for an Aussie bloke that is like losing a beer drinking competition to your baby sister.
“You look back through all the stats and you scratch your head and wonder how it turned out like it has,” says defeated cricket captain Ricky Ponting.
“When we are bad, we are very bad. When we are good, we are good enough.”
The Australian team has now sunk to its lowest test ranking, and Ponting is the first captain to lose two consecutive Ashes on English soil in 109 years – a crime talkback callers are saying is ‘unforgiveable’.
But while Kiwis and Brits enjoy their wins over the common arch-rival, the Aussie decision-makers now have to face a nation that does not tolerate losers.
The big question here is will Robbie Deans and Ponting be out.
The short answer for now is ‘no’, which has surprised fans.
Australian newspapers could not bring themselves to print the results on the front or back pages – you have to look deep inside to find out that they are losers.
