Australia carried all the momentum into this 4th test after a convincing win in Perth, so England needed a good start and they got one.
Shane Watson was gone for five having been dropped twice.
The out of form Ricky Ponting received a vocal reception, and began to show signs of the Ponting of old.
But at the other end, a wayward swing saw the end of Phil Hughes.
The only thing going against England was the umpire review system, but after two unsuccessful reviews, there was no second opinion needed for the dismissal of Ponting.
At 37 for 3, the job of rebuilding the Australian innings again fell to Michael Hussey.
But the man nicknamed Mr Cricket had no answer to a pearler from James Anderson, Australia 58 for 4 when the rain set in.
After a prolonged lunch break Anderson set about to make the most of the moist conditions, and fellow seamer Tim Bresnan wasn't going to be left behind.
Brad Haddin was gone and England were into the tail which didn't threaten to wag.
