John Key has congratulated Julia Gillard on the news (Reuters)

Australia's bid for a UN Security Council seat has been successful, and Prime Minister John Key says it is good news for New Zealand too.

The Aussies secured the support of African nations to win one of two temporary seats at the top table of world politics, and it's thought their campaign cost around $30 million.

Their two-year term begins on the first of January, and Mr Key says he has already texted Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard to say congratulations.

"I think it’s great for Australia,” he says. “I think it’s great from New Zealand’s point of view. We think very often the same way on issues, so having a friend with a seat on the Security Council is great news.”

New Zealand is campaigning for a temporary seat when they next become available in 2015.

If it cost Australia $30 million to gain their seat, they can afford it, they are a wealthy country, have SIX times the popoulation of NZ, plus their polulation is gaining 54,000 people from NZ every year. Mr Key says that "We think very often the same way on issues, so having a friend with a seat on the Security Council is great news” so as we have Australia as a close friend on the Security Council, I cannot see ANY LOGICAL REASON why little ole NZ has to be on it. Can someone please tell Mr Key and Mr McCully that we do not want to spend millions of NZ dollars supplied by the hard working, overtaxed, overRated, diligent, struggling taxpayer - trying to keep up with the big boys and girls. We cannot even run our Government Computers securely - you should spend some more money on these.
