The Australian Government’s plans to tax its 500 worst polluters $NZ29.50 for every tonne of carbon they produce from next year will not lead to a loss of investment, the Government says.
Climate Change Minister Nick Smith says New Zealand and Australia have similar schemes, including the costs placed on cement, aluminium and steel industries, but Smith says the two countries have agreed climate change policies should not encourage investment in the nation with the softer climate change policy.
The Australian scheme will cost the taxypayer $A9.90 per week, which will be offset by an assistance package. New Zealand’s scheme will cost the taxpayer $3 per week.
New Zealand’s fee of $12.50 per tonne of carbon is to rise to $25 in 2013.
New Zealand is the only country outside Europe with a national emissions trading scheme.
