The Australian coal miners union has delivered a damning report on the safety of New Zealand mines.

It comes hard on the heels of Prime Minister John Key telling The Australian newspaper the set up at the Pike River mine would not have been allowed across the Tasman.

The union says it's vital to have a second entry to the mine and an improved level of monitoring methane gas.

General Secretary Andrew Vickers says improvements in New Zealand mines are needed.

The bodies of the 29 men who died after a gas explosion at Pike River in November last year still haven't been recovered.
