Australian miner Fortescue Metals Group has been granted a prospecting permit for an area of the upper South Island bordering the Kahurangi National Park.

FMG Pacific, a subsidiary of the Perth company, was given the green light to search for 23 minerals in the 3568sq km permit area but was most interested in iron ore and coal, The New Zealand Herald reported.

The permit was the latest of 14 picked up by the company in this country, including an area off the Northland coast.

A company spokesman said initial work would be "desktop prospecting" -- analysis of historic data and 3D modelling.

Fortescue had experience of mining next to national parks in Australia and of "managing its environmental obligations" he said.

Why do we keep giving our national resources away to Australian companies? Why aren't these permits being granted to New Zealand companies? This sort of thing really really annoys me! Which idiot granted these permits?

Dont see the problem as long as they dont break any rules and dont cause damage in the park.
