Australia's speaker of the house Peter Slipper has just resigned over a scandal involving lurid and sexist text messages he sent to a former staff member.

It comes after Mr Slipper narrowly survived a vote to boot him out, and a fiery debate in which Prime Minister Julia Gillard called opposition leader Tony Abbott a misogynist
