A crocodile roaming on the streets of Cairns in north-eastern Australia was captured by authorities yesterday.

Some men were clearing a drain when a 1.5 metre crocodile emerged.

They held it at bay with their brooms while they waited for wildlife authorities to arrive.

Some onlookers stood at a distance and took photos of the rare incident.

"You don't see this everyday," said an unidentified local policeman.

A towel was thrown over the reptiles head and then a rubber band put around its mouth.

A ranger from Queensland National Parks Service arrived to take it away, nursing it on his lap in the front seat of a car.

A fully grown crocodile can reach up to 4.85 metres in length.
