An autopsy will be carried out on human remains found in the water at the Goat Island marine reserve, north of Auckland, at the weekend.

A recreational diver alerted police to the find, in 16 metres of water at the reserve near Leigh yesterday. Police divers today confirmed the discovery.

The remains have now been retrieved and divers will carry out a further search of the area. So far, no clothing or other identifiable features have been found. Police are working towards an identification of the remains via DNA.

No name will be released until all next of kin have been informed.

Chinese PhD student Yue Gui, 30, went missing on the island in early June.
