Police in west Auckland expect the results of a post mortem to reveal the identity of a body found floating in a Henderson creek.

A passerby spotted the corpse floating in the stream near Millsbrook Road yesterday afternoon, at the bottom of a steep eight-metre bank.

Police will return to the creek this morning to begin a scene examination of the spot where the body was found face down.

They are releasing few details about the discovery - but have some ideas about who it could be.

Among the people reported missing in Auckland is student Srikanth Rayadurgam. The 23-year-old was last seen on October 1 and his belongings were found scattered along the harbour at Westhaven.

His family are fearing foul play.

Also reported missing is 58-year-old John Meldrum, who was last seen at his home early on October 5.

Mr Meldrum's home is about 900m from the stream.

The body was removed from the waterway early yesterday evening, but Detective Senior Seargeant Stand Brown says they are still trying to identify it.

"We have some idea, but due to the next of kin not knowing and because of not being able to do some basic identification, it may be some days before we can release those details," he says.

Mr Brown says police are yet to determine a cause of death.

"The body will be taken to the Auckland mortuary where we will be doing a post mortem, to see if we're looking at an accident, or something more sinister."

A police guard has been at the scene overnight.
