I have worked with Avianca and she has an awesome personality and didnt deserve this crap. I once applied for a job at the shop which val works at the manager there was about to hire me and val stepped in with her big mouth and convinced her not to hire me right in front of me because I had never done pageants and was to short to do them. All Val cares about is herself and making money the shop is a surf shop that has notjing to do with that industry but she couldnt obviously get any money out of me, so didnt want me there. She is self centered and nasty.

This whole fiasco needs further investigation. Irrespective of whether people think beauty pageants are good or not, some girls enjoy entering them. They enter them in good faith, believing their chance is as good as anyone else. Then along comes a national organiser who decides who is going to be the winner, before the pageants even take place (eg I have read Miss Wellington 2012, Miss North Harbour 2011 etc.). People then spend money supporting their 'girl' including expensive tickets to shows, the girls themselves buying gowns and make up and so on. Some girls have significant backing and some have none - but somewhere, people are putting money into these events in good faith. The organsier of Miss North Harbour agitated this year to have Miss Bohm removed - and of course the person who would benefit from this was her own entrant. Miss Otago has now been stripped of her national placing too - what a shambles. The best result would have been to withdraw NZ's entry into Miss UNZ this year and try again next year with a new director, transparent rules and unbiased judges. Oh and importantly if they are going to employ a 'spokeswoman' how about NOT making it a former MUNZ entrant who can't spell.!!

I thought female beauty contests were a thing of the past. I didn't know we still had them. They were big news when I was a boy, but the whole concept seems a bit old fashioned by today's standards.

Val lott comes across as rude, arrogant and self centred to say the least! it is very obvious that she should not have allowed Avianca to enter if she was not eligible - she obviously had her own plan but it backfired on her - and she is now blaming everyone else. Her interviews show her as a schreeching fishwife and highlight how unprofessional she is in all of this.

@danielfalgate.... I have worked very closely with Val in the past, I have experienced her business nature. She may know her stuff but she has no regard for fair play. If you do not worship the ground she walks on and bring her profit your as good as dead to her. Heaven help you if you stand up for yourself.

I find it hard to see how Val Lott can be an inspiration to anyone when she is incapable of adhering to the rules of the pageant by allowing non NZ citizens to enter.Avianca was an entrant in Miss Howick,so Val(who runs Miss Howick) had ample opportunity to ensure that only NZ citizens enter. It suited her purpose at the time, as obviously there weren't enough girls to enter.
Val must be in full "Damage Control Mode" right now. Good job !!
She has been topping up her numbers with non NZ citizens for ages & Avianca's case has now brought this out
into the public eye.I hope any girl silly enough to enter any pageant is made absolutely clear on all the rules & regulations.

Val Lott is an inspiration, all publicity is good publicity. She works very hard and people should take leaf out for management and negotiation skills!

The rules of the Miss NZ Competition should have been strictly adhered to by the contestants & Val Lott herself ! To allow ineligible entrants is corrupt.
If there are not enough NZ girls to enter the competition then maybe it's time for the beauty pageant industry in NZ to die a natural death & Val Lott can find another way to earn money, instead of encouraging foreign girls into entering competitions that they should never enter in the first place.
There is no point being rude about Avianca, there have been many foreign girls in Val's pageants over the years that have not had NZ citizenship. It has suited her as she needed numbers & sponsor money. The whole thing stinks !!! Fortunately at last, this has been brought to the attention of the media.
I hope the Miss Universe organisers hear all about it !

Don't disagree JAS - Talia is very attractive - but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and many people could be 'beautiful' with fake lashes, piles of make up, hair extensions, capped teeth and so on. Roll on the competitions where girls can just be themselves !
