Among the suburbs hit by this morning’s quake, Avonside, about 3km from the city centre, is one of the worst affected.
Residents have been evacuated from some houses and roads are closed.

Larges parts of Avonside are only accessible on foot and in some places, even that’s not possible.

Most of the streets which run alongside the river are wrecked and one which can be driven over come with risks.

Liquefaction of the soil has caused sink holes and large cracks everywhere. Broken water mains have combined with the sludge to make a real mess of this battered suburb.

Residents believe the clean up will take months.

Avonside was one of the suburbs which sustained the most damage. Footpaths and roads have been smashed to pieces and a pedestrian bridge shows just how violently the earthquake was felt.

Parts of Avonside and neighbouring Dallington are beyond repair.

Almost every street was hit. The disaster some would call an ‘act of God’ didn’t even spare the local church.

Hi , I live on avonside drive , our house is uninhabitable , we have tried several times to contact eqc , but to no avail . We have 3 children and are homeless. There are porta loos in front of our house , but we can't go into our house because the ceiling has collapsed , the floor has opened up , we have liquifaction in our living room and can see daylight through our walls. Like you we are getting quite frustrated. Any advice is welcome. Thanks Arlene

I live in Avonside Drive on the corner of Braken Street, our house is off its foundations the section of road infront of our house is sliced all the way around our house we are like an island, since the morning of the quake we have had a constant flow of traffic in both directions, non stop its relentless, NO ONE has been to see us, NO ONE has inspected this road and the lorries and rubber neckers continue to come, please tell me why this road has not been CLOSED off to residents and services ONLY? And by that I dont mean someone just asking the question and getting a lie of oh we live in Avonside Drive - I would like to see a list of all surnames on this road and house numbers and those that dont live here DONT DRIVE down here, come see by all means but PARK and WALK!

If anyone has anymore news on when we will hear anything on Avonside please tell!
