For 50 years Jim Churchman and Fred George lived each other's lives after being mistakenly swapped at birth. Despite years of suspicion, it was only confirmed by DNA testing in 2005.

Now US-based Mr George is back in the country and catching up with both of his families.

Mr George and Mr Churchman were born two hours apart at St Margarets in Dunedin in 1947. The two baby boys would be placed in the wrong bassinets - blond-haired Fred to be raised by a Catholic Lebanese family, and dark-haired Jim by a family of Presbyterian Scots.

But their paths would still cross - Mr Churchman would later become friends with Mr George's brother.

Although the boys' physical differences to their families always created suspicions, no one knew for sure.

For 57 years the two lived their lives, and it was only a DNA test in 2005 that confirmed the mistake. Mr George would later write a book about the experience.

Despite the mix-up, Mr George says he holds no anger. He is just thankful he now has two families to call on.
