As the first phase of the Royal Commission inquiry into the Pike River disaster comes to an end, one little boy serves as a reminder of the lives lost - and the hope that remains.

Three-week-old baby Sam has the same name as his dad.

His father, 26-year-old Sam Mackie, was one of the 29 men who lost their lives in the Pike River mine.

Melissa Byrne, baby Sam's mother, says she feels like she has a bit of her man back.

A very Special wee man indeed who I am sure will be a real blessing and comfort to his Mum and to his older brother. So very sad, but what an amazing young woman Mel is, I wish her all the very best for her future with her two beautiful boys and I pray that she and all the other 28 families get the answers they so deserve as to what happened to take the lives of their men. Much love, support and respect to Mel and each family member and friend, work mate of the Pike 29 brothers who all left us way too soon. Always remembered.
