Auckland’s Butterfly Creek is expecting baby crocodiles next week.

An import of live crocodile eggs arrived from Australia in April and, with the eggs due to hatch in late May or early June, the baby crocs can be expected any day now.

The eggs were flown over from Australia’s Northern Territory and needed to be carefully transported to ensure they arrived safely, with careful packaging and constant monitoring.

Butterfly Creek – which is already home to saltwater crocodiles and baby alligators – is incubating the eggs in a temperature and humidity controlled environment.

The hatchlings will be around 28-30cm in length.
