Auckland Zoo's 30th giraffe calf entered the world on Monday evening.
The gangly little girl is the fourth offspring of mum Rukiya. Both are said to be in good health following vet checks.
"Both mother and calf are both doing well, but we're going to give her and her calf some time to bond in private like they would in the wild," said Auckland Zoo Pridelands team leader Nat Sullivan.
Rukiya's previous pregnancies had all resulted in males, so the zoo is very pleased with the new female.
"A giraffe birth is always exciting to witness however the birth of a female calf is significant to the Australasian region, as she is valuable for the breeding programme," explained Ms Sullivan.
Zoo visitors can expect to see the pair out in the open within the next month. They will be slowly integrated with the other giraffe, zebra and ostrich in the Pridelands area.
Auckland Zoo now has four giraffes.
