The Backstreet Boys arrived in the country this afternoon ahead of their concert at Auckland's Vector Arena on Thursday.

Nightline's Ali Ikram - who is a very, very big fan of the Backstreet Boys, it has to be said - is still wondering why he was the only journalist there.

In the late '90s, when boy bands were king, the Backstreet Boys sold over 100 million albums. No one could walk in slow motion like them, and no other boy band understood fully that being in love looks frightfully similar to constipation.

But their arrival at Auckland Airport could not have been more low key, the boys confronted by just two fans seeking photos.

The Backstreet Boys have been to New Zealand before, but only to do promotion - this will be their first concert.

The hardcore posse of local fans saw all four of the group's Australian concerts.

"Last night in Brisbane one of the members, Brian, acknowledged me on stage," says Jenny Zindell. "He was like, 'Is this four or five shows you're going to?' So he was adorable."

But having Backstreet in New Zealand is the culmination of a decade's lobbying by fans and a petition with thousands of signatures.

While the ladies at the airport have seen as many as 14 concerts, Thursday night at Vector will special.

"It's extremely overwhelming," says Kirsten Mander. "We got pretty emotional on the plane coming over, it's great to have them here finally."

They've survived the departure of Kevin Richardson, rehab and legal wrangles, but their fans believe after 17 years the boys are better than ever.

I wouldve driven from Rotorua to meet them at the airport if i knew when the were landing, and i wouldve been there to frewell them if i knew when they flew out. The concert was awesome, i have grown up along to there music as have they. Its awesome to have them going strong, they may be a member down, but they are stronger and better then ever. I started listening to them when i was 10years old (almost 15years ago), i now have a 5yr and 2yr old daughters who are huge fans, i think its great that it has gone through to another generation of fans. I love it.

I'm a HUGE FAN OF BSB, AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TIME THEY WOULD ARRIVE TO AUCKLAND AIRPORT, SINCE I was 6 AND I'm listening to them watching them and singing their songs, and I cracked my knee last week but that didn't hold me back of attending the concert I WENT WITH MY STICKS AND DANCED AND SANG, I'd die to have a photo like that with them =( I WANNA SEEEEE THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEM IN PERSON ="""(

I agree with Kaylee, the BSB need to be more publicized;especially in the United States. The BSB are huge over seas and sell-out most of their shows, gathering in new, old, and contemporary fans that simply adore their music. After being one of the few Male BSB fans, i can say confidently that the BSB are undoubtedly fantastic performers and singers, but are lacking promotion in the boys' home country. Yes, the "boy-band" craze may be long gone, but the boys arent, and they are still producing wonderful music. So underneath it all, the Backstreet Boys need a label that cares about their CURRENT successes and not just give them the cold shoulder because their 'time'in the spotlight is supposedly "over" although im sure dedicated BSB fans like myself can easily beg to differ. KTBSPA!!!!!!

I have been a great big fan of The Backstreet Boys for many years and are proud of what they do. The only thing about them is their management. The management has made them look very low class and disrespectful. They have not come back to San Antonio Texas anymore and they have had fans that never left thier side even though they left ours. They need to open thier eyes and so does their management and realize Texas has fans and deserve to have concerts more often than just once every ten years, that is making the boys look bad. I have wanted to see them come back so much since I have loved them from day 1. If it was not for The Backstreet Boys I would not have inspirations to do what I do. It's not about traveling around the world to just certain spots. When you get into a field like the boys have, you need to man up and travel ALL AROUND THE WORLD, not just travel here and there and skip alot of The United States, SAN ANTONIO TEXAS IS PART OF THE WORLD, and that would be a great stop along the way to have concerts at. I would love to see them back in San Antonio because I respect them and enjoy their music.
