New research supports the claim by ACT that its low party vote came after opinion polls wrote them off.

The research carried out by a politics graduate at Otago University says that people often take the 'popular vote' and go with the party that's already seen as a success.

Michelle Nicol carried out the research and says the 'bandwagon effect' would have had a negative impact on ACT:

"You can imagine that a lot of people would have been discouraged from voting for the party because of the negative perception of them in the media."

ACT polled just over 1 percent. Don Brash had talked about getting them to 15 percent when he took over.

I think Brash doomed the party, he did as far as I am concerned. I did not like the way he went about gaining "leadership" or any of his subsequent stupid comments. No party vote from me for fear Brash would get in. Rodney though was loyal right to the end to ACT so he came out of this with his reputation intact.

Heard on the news that ACT are looking to rebrand their party. Can I suggest the name
National for their new name as the prior users of the name seem to have changed to the john key party.

Don Brash was never going to get 15% for ACT. Brashes Orewa speech still holds in most peoples thoughts. Brash did do good for the National party in 2003, when he gained leadership from Bill English, who single handedly destroyed Nationals party vote to Barely 20%. Brash did lift the National support out of oblivion. Its doubtful if he could have performed the same miracle for ACT.
