Police have charged a 22-year-old man with murder after a 45-year-old man was found dead in the Bay of Plenty.

Pomare Mason's body was discovered when police were called to a domestic incident in the Matahi Valley, near Taneatua, 13km south of Whakatane, last night.

The accused man, a Matahi Valley resident, was due to appear in Whakatane District Court this morning, where it was likely he would be remanded in custody over the Christmas break, said Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen of Whakatane CIB.

A team of 20 officers, including forensic scientists, were now concentrating their investigation on the crime scene, he said.
