GNS Science said the quake hit at 2.19am Sunday morning

A deep magnitude-5.0 earthquake struck off the Bay of Plenty coast early on Sunday morning, but there have been no reports of damage.

The 50km deep quake was recorded 40km north of Te Kaha at 2.19am, GNS Science said.

It would have been felt widely in the eastern Bay of Plenty and on the Raukumara Peninsula, but both police and the Fire Service said there had been no reports of damage.
