A new US$800 million theme park based on movie classic Ben Hur will be built in Rome, Italy.

Cinecitta World will be modelled on Hollywood's Universal Studios and also draw inspiration from the iconic movies shot in the historical city, most notably the work of legendary director Federico Fellini.

Oscar-winning production designer Dante Ferretti has been given the job of creating the park, which will occupy part of producer Dino De Laurentiis' former studio south of the city - reports Daily Variety.

Construction is slated to begin next year and it's hoped the park will open in 2011.
