This week Labour launched a promise to increase benefits to parents as part of its children's policy.

Margaret Perry is a solo mum of eight, six of whom live still at home. She's on the DPB and lives in a state house in South Auckland.

When she featured in a 3 News story last night about Labour's election promises, many viewers were upset and annoyed that Margaret had so many children and a Sky TV dish on her roof.

Viewers wanted to know what she does with the $560 she has left over each week after she's paid her rent.

Mihingarangi Forbes first visited Margaret three years ago. Today she went back to visit Margaret, and see if anything has changed.

Campbell Live also spoke to Phil Goff about how his policy will help people in Margaret's situation.

3 News Political Editor Duncan Garner also looked at the poverty issue tonight - you can watch his story here.

Eight children is a lot has she ever heard of contraception some of the options we have in nz are free after birth, i don't see why my tax should pay for her, people who are on support from the government shouldn't really be able to have the choice to be in debt or have sky they don't earn it they don't get up nearly every day and go to work, she choose to have all eight children she is lucky she gets anything in some countries the government doesn't even help she could be homeless and her poor children she choose to bring into this world could be in the system, i blame the government they should think very wisely on what they are spending our taxes on rethink about some of the benifits they have its great that she wants to learn something but if you have eight children why is it some elses problem that there is no one to look after them? i have friends that are solo mums even though im married im not against solo mums but even they make a lot more effort then this they do get support from the government but they are the few still trying to find work and other ways to make money. you are lucky you get that amount from the government im about to go on maternity leave im still at work due in 3weeks and i work 40+ hours im lucky to get what you get every week and you do nothing, just recently i found out that PPL max amount weekly is only 450 and that is before tax so count yourself lucky.

Maybe a neighbour or friend could point this woman in the direction of a chemist or a doctor to get contraceptive advice. Why should I work full time on $15hr to pay taxes for the likes of this woman who needs to learn to keep her legs shut or find a partner who will pay for his offspring. I am sick of women like this who think everyone else in NZ should pay for her b------s. This country can not afford to keep paying for breeding factories like this. And by the way, after paying a mortgage, power, phone I can't afford Sky or Broadband. Labour will never get my vote due to policies like they are proposing. Continue doing what you are Paula B to cut the numbers of women like this and you will continue to get my vote.

I think this lady is doing a great job, and has happy children who are loved. I work full time, I earn good money and I think I'm fortunate because I've benefitted from good opportunities during my life. I don't resent my taxes going to support children such as these when their parents are doing their best and showing their children love and care.

and once again its all about the money isnt it? wot about the children?? the children suffer at the hands of an uncaring government and a bickering nation. woo hoo shes got sky! so wot! should there be no downtime for mummy on her own? should she sell drugs to make more money? u capitalist people make me sick. all you care about is money. ITS ABOUT THE KIDS YOU JERKS. no one can go back in time and everyone is different. too many kids? maybe they should be killed?? would you be happier then you jerks?? give the woman a break, shes the one looking after those kids, in her situation, not you.

as a single parent myself, we do try our best. we do not know the whole story of this woman's life and her situation. try not to be so judgmental. for a family that has everything it is difficult to see the other point of view..

I would also like to add to my previous comment that as Margaret is a stay at home mother has she put a vegetable garden in and growing her own food to help with the budget? She must have some children who are of an age to help her. I was at primary school when I first was taught how to put a garden in. I am also a believer of beneficeries like her getting most of her benefit in food and clothing vouchers. This would allow the children to eat good meals and to go to school after having had breatfast and carrying a packed lunch. Also dressed in warm clothing.

"hhh" Of course i blame capitalism. the monetary system is the oldest known institution in the world, when you realize that money is not a resource in itself the monetary system is a technical invention (pointless one) not an natural appendage that we are born with, you will see how ridiculous it is. Its so old and pointless it would be as if everyone started carrying clubs and wearing animal fur grunting and naming their children "Ugh". Globalization of capitalism (into the free trade market) human inequality has increased, along with crime and pollution and waste and sickness. It is not a coincidence the market is entirely to blame but people are so indoctrinated into the system they can't even begin to fathom in their tiny little corrupted brains that there is another way for the world to operate. Through science we could feed and clothe every human being on the planet. You say we as humans are the problem? so you think that when Margaret was born and grew up thinking "i'm going to have lots of kids and live of the DPB" It is society that created her that is why even if she specifically got help got a job etc etc there would be someone just like her ready to take that place. People need to realize that if you only treat symptoms of the inequality the monetary system creates while still perpetuating the institution that creates people like that things will not get better only worse.
