Social Development Minister Paula Bennett is being accused of "stooping to a new low" after reading out job ads in Parliament.

Ms Bennett was dealing with Labour Party questions on youth unemployment when she said people could find jobs if they looked for them.

She said the Warehouse Group wanted 300 workers, Brightwater Engineers wanted 40, Mitre 10 was opening a new store and needed 50 and Bunnings Warehouse was looking for 40.

"It's tough out there but there are jobs... people need to be actively looking to be able to take up the opportunities, it's as simple as that," she said.

Labour's social development spokeswoman, Jacinda Ardern, says the minister's response was "just plain nasty".

"To read out a list of supposed job vacancies - thus implying work is freely available if people are looking for it - is a pretty low blow," she said.

"The minister is responsible for more than 50,000 Kiwis on the unemployment benefit and implying they aren't looking hard enough is just insulting."

well said Gary I would like to see Paula prove that all the places she mentioned are advertising for the alleged vacancies she speaks of.

Lets hope Paula applies for one of these jobs so we can get rid of this vindictive nasty, oxygen wasting, bulk of lard, out of government so NZ can get some pride and dignity back.

Why is this woman still here. Waste of taxpayers money and govts time. Maybe she could hire a few unemployed to fix her security systems that she has problems with or is that not the point with her releasing private details herself and stating she will again. I wonder how many of the jobs are full time and enough to pay the bills? Most of these jobs mentioned will be part time and no one can survive on the wages. I guess more part time means twice as many are employed aye Miss Bennett. Looks good for the stats for national. What a hoax. Insulting isnt the word, this woman is just plain stupid.

I am wondering why she would read out some job vacancies for older skilled tradesmen when trying to deflect fro youth unemployment. All of those vacancies would require the wisdom and experience of an older person.

So if everyone would just try really hard there would be no unemployment? This latest piece of nastiness from Bennett must be soul destroying for those who have tried so hard (and been rejected so many times) when searching for work. When politics has lost its' soul it has no further use. How do we rid ourselves of this nasty, vindictive and punitive National Government.

i will explain it to you brian, when for example a supermaket opens and they need say 200 workers, they will get around 1500 applicants then 1300 are still without work . they are simply far fewer jobs REAL jobs that pay more than the bare minimum they have to by law avaliable for jobseekers and this underhanded stunt by the minister implies jobs are a plenty in the land of milk and honey when they are not!!!!
