Veteran Australian entertainer Bert Newton has been released from hospital and is preparing to rejoin the cast of hit musical Wicked on Tuesday.

The 73-year-old was admitted to a medical facility in Singapore earlier this month amid fears he had contracted pneumonia again, following a battle with the deadly lung condition last summer.

He pulled out of his role in Wicked and spent several days under the care of doctors, who diagnosed him with a heavy cold.

Newton has now been discharged and he plans to take up his place on stage again on Tuesday.

Wicked spokeswoman Amanda Osborne says, "He is absolutely back on track. Bert Newton has not had a heart attack or emergency heart surgery in Singapore. He has had a very heavy cold, which caused him some minor complications and a short stint in hospital. Due to a bout of debilitating pneumonia last year, Newton has to be extra cautious."
