The legal team for New Zealand anti-whaling activist Pete Bethune say it will be at least a month before his fate is known.
The first part of Mr Bethune's trial, on a charge of assault after a clash in the Southern Ocean, came to an end in Tokyo last night.
However, closing arguments in the trial won't be heard until next week.
Prosecution lawyers will read their closing statement then Mr Bethune will have an opportunity to read his – and plans to do so in Japanese.
The Japanese court is expected to take a further month to release a written verdict.
