The first tourists to space paid as much as $50 million for the experience - what would you pay to be one of the first ever people to fly in a jetpack?

The chance to do so is within reach. The Christchurch company behind the Martin jetpack are auctioning off the experience on TradeMe.

With only the controls in front of you, flying a jetpack is a real free-flight experience.

Creator Glenn Martin has been perfecting his jetpack for 30 years, but he still needs more guinea pigs.

But it can't be that hard to hover a kind of half-motorbike, half-lawnmower in the air - can it?

Safety is a key concern for the Martin Jetpack Company, so the auction winner will spend a full day training with the team.

You have to weigh less than 90kg and be over 18 years old to bid on the auction, but other than that the sky's the limit.

The one thing they don't tell you is that the helmet makes you look like a guineapig

You could win a three-day Martin jetpack experience on eBay, but the minimum next bid is $43,000. TradeMe's auction is only at around $4,000 so far.

The auction closes on Thursday. Click here to bid.
