Bill McKibben talks to Samantha Hayes about 350.org, the environmental campaign that aims to involve the entire planet.
The organisation’s name comes from climate scientist James Hansen’s statement in 2008 that any atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide above 350 parts per million was unsafe.
“If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from its current 385 ppm to at most 350 ppm, but likely less than that,” stated Mr Hansen et al in their paper’s abstract.
Mr McKibben’s organisation has staged demonstrations all over the world – CNN described 5200 demonstrations in 181 countries October as the most widespread day of human activism in history.
