Bill McKibben talks to Samantha Hayes about 350.org, the environmental campaign that aims to involve the entire planet.

The organisation’s name comes from climate scientist James Hansen’s statement in 2008 that any atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide above 350 parts per million was unsafe.

“If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from its current 385 ppm to at most 350 ppm, but likely less than that,” stated Mr Hansen et al in their paper’s abstract.

Mr McKibben’s organisation has staged demonstrations all over the world – CNN described 5200 demonstrations in 181 countries October as the most widespread day of human activism in history.

What a load of rubbish. CO2 concentrations have been far higher in the past as recorded in ice core samples many going back many 10's of thousands of years to way beyond "man" lighting fires, let alone burning fossil fuels be it to keep warm long before cars aircraft etc. The oceans of the world sequester CO2 and CH4. It's high time the idiots that rave on about Global Warming be it the natural cycle or the almost nonexistent effect of "man" realised that H2O CO2 and CH4 are natural substances essential to Life" and definitely not pollutants. SO2 as mostly produced by volcanoes and the many other substances that "man" does produce, and this does mean the plastics - mostly the oil derived forms are our real enemy, let's get these controlled, along with poisons coming from the pharmaceutical industry and the nature destroying insecticides etc.
