The Bioethics Council has issued a final press release and its having a dig at the government as it prepares to close its doors.

Minister of the Environment Nick Smith decided to disestablish the Council, as the government also cancelled several environmental programmes in a bid to save money.

Dr Smith claims the council's work is duplicated elsewhere. However, Council Chair Martin Wilkinson disputes that.

He says it has been involved in decisions about research on human embryos and had given advice on many aspects of biotechnology. He described them as broad topics not falling neatly into the areas of particular ministries or committees.
