Air New Zealand's all black 777-300, with a stylised fern livery on the tail, landed at the capital this morning before heading to Wanaka to perform a series of flyovers at the Warbirds Over Wanaka event.
The airline's newest and longest plane usually flies on long-haul services to London and Los Angeles and does not often fly to ports in New Zealand, Air NZ general manager airline operations and safety and chief pilot, Captain David Morgan says.
Air NHew Zealand’s other 777-300 aircraft has landed in Wellington twice in the past, both last year when touring the country.
Two 777-200 aircraft have also landed in Wellington, one last year in the wake of the February earthquake and one in 2002 when The Queen visited.
Warbirds Over Wanaka, which runs from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, attracts thousands.
The Air Force Red Checkers acrobatic display team will perform today to mark the end of their national tour to celebrate 75 years of the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).
The RNZAF will also display aircraft including a Hercules and an Orion, and its Kiwi Blue parachute team will conduct display jumps.
