An Auckland food franchise is investigating after a large jagged blade was found in one of its wraps.

The wrap was bought from a Habitual Fix store and the buyer says pieces of wilted salad may have saved her from biting into it.

Charlotte Westerhof is lucky the metal blade is in her hand and not her stomach.

Last night she bought a vegetarian wrap from Habitual Fix and took it home to find a nasty surprise.

“I didn’t like the lettuce, it was really wilted and so I thought I would just start digging it out. I was pulling it out and saw this big metal jagged thing in there,” she says.

“If I had bitten into it, it probably would have cut my gum, cracked my teeth or something. If I swallowed it, I definitely would be in the hospital.”

Ms Westerhof posted a photo onto Habitual Fix's Facebook page but that was immediately deleted.

“So I posted again on their Facebook page, saying ‘hey guys, don’t know why you guys deleted the message, but this is an issue, you cant ignore it’. And they said that they would contact me as soon as possible.”

Habitual Fix founder James Tucker has been investigating and says the blade did not come from their Queen Street store.

“Looking at the size and shape of the blade, my gut feel is that it has come from the lettuce growing or harvesting equipment,” he says.

But all the lettuce is washed and put under a metal detector before being sent to stores and Mr Tucker says staff quality check all food before it is served.

“We are as mortified as her when we saw the photos and look, my absolute sympathy goes out to her.”

Mr Tucker says he has told all his staff to be extra vigilant with checking food and says he will meet with his suppliers next week.

This should not be treated so lightly because it is no joke!! What ever this object is, surely it comes secondary to other concerns ...?? Why are Habitual Fix obviously quite happy to supply such crappy product to their customers? Why would Habitual Fix put sub-standard wilted lettuce in the wrap in the first place? AND how could they NOT notice this hard metal object in the lettuce for goodness sake? The customer could have been very seriously injured! The Habitual Fix "it-couldn't-have-been-us" attitude as displayed in the article video is not worthy of a food outlet of any sort. What does OSH or the Health Dept think? And as for the lettuce supplier - the video of this story says that the lettuce supplier not only wash the lettuce, but also pass it through a metal detector!!! Hello...??! Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture? As a result of this story, I will not be touching Habitual Fix food any time soon - if ever! Has anyone else found such stuff in their food? I would be interested in a follow-up story covering these areas of concern in more depth.

Hi there, I may be wrong but this information might help you find the sorce of this object. I'm pretty sure the object found in the wrap is called a spline and is generally used in the assembly of aluminium extrusions to affix the mitres (corners). I have seen similar objects applied in this way for the construction of, windows, glass fridge doors, food display cabinets, shop fittings such as shelves, cabinets and stands and in suspended lighs and ceilings. This may not help at all, but it may help solve the mystery as I have seen things like this carelessly dropped into product in the past by incompetent trades persons, there are a lot of them out there just look at target hahaha.
