Kangaroos are Australia’s national symbol, and yet they are slaughtered in their droves.

Since 1980, it is estimated that a staggering 73 million kangaroos have been killed.

This deadly toll is sanctioned by the government, who say that the native mammals are devastating the environment.

But is that true, or are the kangaroos being used as a scapegoat?

60 Minutes reporter Rod Vaughan investigates.

The bloody harvest is a bloody disgrace! And for those who eat them, ask the kangaroo hunters if they do? Learn about the massive worm burden they carry. Swallow that. And to say we need to slaughter them to manage their numbers, best you do a bit of environmental study before making such ridiculous statements. As for hunters, well the reason we aren't all out there with you, is that the majority of us don't find it fun murdering. Bad karma be upon your souls.

Iam thoroughly disgusted at the absolute hypocracy and arrogance of our politicians to be so outraged and vocal in condemning the Japanese for killing 'our' whales while ignoring the plight of our Native animals annd also encouraging the brutality inflicted for nothing but monetary reasons. Mother Nature has her ways of controlling any over population as she has done for thousands of years and doesn't need the help of selfish and greedy humans whose mismanagement of the environment has caused mre irreparable damage than any other species. Would the oliticans be so outspoken about the whales if the whale watching industry in Australia wasn't so profitable? I don't think so. Meanwhile the persecution of our native wildlife cntinues unabated. For those who laugh at the idea that the Kangaroo will become extinct should look at the Tasmanian Tiger and now the plight of the Tasmanian Tiger and pure strains of the Dingo.

There is no argument. I would rather these wild creatures be left wild. If they die from natural causes that is better than being taken before their time by pre-meditated killing (shooting), bashing to death and other violent methods. I believe you cannot argue that kangaroos are in plague proportion when more to the point its the human population that is in plague proportion. We cannot look after or sustain the planets resources. We are sucking all our resources dry and the human population continues to rise to alarming proportions. Leave the kangaroos alone. We don't cull humans do we?

I wish you would highlight this cruel practice to Australia and the rest of the world. The hunting is unregulated as far as which roos they can take. They try to kill the largest roos, thus eliminating the alpha male and leaving the herd without direction. They either leave joeys without mothers to die or kill them cruelly. This practice should be stopped before roos are decimated from all areas of Australia

I love animals and dislike animal cruelty. In saying that I am also a hunter! I take what I need and can use. The animals I hunt are dispatched in a quick and humane way. Yes I have hunted kangaroos and I have also saved kangaroos and taken them to Vets, shelters, sanctuaries and zoos for care. Since the settlement of European people in Australia, the land has been cleared and this has opened up the path for the kangaroo to feed and breed. Breed it has done! It has bred to such enormous populations, that in times of drought many tens of thousands die because of this over population. Through lack of water and food the poor kangaroo dies an agonising death and not many survive in those areas of drought. When there are good times again the kangaroos over populate once more and they move through the countryside in waves. The organised culling of kangaroos helps to balance the populations to suit the environment. This is done through licensing and controlled by quotas. The kangaroo carcases are not wasted nearly every part of the animal is used, whether it be for human consumption, pet food, clothing or foot ware to name but a few. These animals are hunted under spotlight by professional hunters. Sure as Australians we kill our National emblem, well both of them, if you include the Emu as well. Sure they are cute looking, so are lambs and calfs. It's fine for people who love animals to comment and say that this is cruel and disgusting but the majority of these people live in the city and watch documentaries on kangaroos or go to the zoo to see them. They should get out of the city and see for themselves what a problem the kangaroo population is doing to the environment. For those living in Melbourne all they have to do is go to Tullamarine airport and travel to Bulla some ten kilometres. Just on dusk you'll see hundreds of kangaroos in the paddocks. travel to Hay in New South Wales and you'll see vast populations numbering tens of thousands. Culling is a productive and good idea. So is wildlife conservation, the two go hand in hand!

Blunders in the name of conservation and ecology. Wake up ! You don't need to kill to live and eat healthy. Current meat consumption trends are absolutely unsustainable. even basic biology is being undermined to justify wanton killing. when kangaroos don't get to eat enough, they won't reproduce in large numbers and do no encroach their habitat. All animal populations self-sustain themselves and humans are not in a predator-prey relationship with kangaroos. Humans are no longer in any relationship with nature. Self-destruction is the future...

I grew up in the countryside and what I witnessed was atrocious. Even as a child I could not comprehend such brutal disregard for a species. As an adult living in the city, I am faced with yet another form atrocity - the acceptance of government figures and propaganda that ventures to create native wildlife into a commodity. I think many Australians are confused - conflicted by being cauhgt between their own sense of justice and the lies that are shoved down our throats at every turn as the government tries to support a atrocious industry. This video says what needs to be heard. This video is a true voice amongst the bullshit. Thank you, New Zealand! Tell the world!!
