Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine

Reviewed by Kate Rodger

I am a long-time fan of actor Ryan Gosling and alongside Michelle Williams in an Oscar-nominated performance they leave no emotional stone unturned in this fading of the light tale of a struggling relationship.

Blue Valentine is from relative unknown Derek Cianfrance, and his story gently shifts back and forth in time, documenting the rise and fall of the relationship, stitched together with unflinching intimacy and a crippling authenticity.

Twelve years in the making, Blue Valentine was worth the wait.

Five stars.
