The Blues stripped off today for their now annual Devonport Navy Base pre-season mud run.

Not everyone took part though – coach Pat Lam pulled rank and watched from the side.

“I did it in my playing days. Now you coach, and that’s the joys of coaching – I don’t have to get in there anymore,” says Lam.

Piri Weepu, too, didn’t participate, as his groin injury kept him from getting dirty – although he claimed that if he was fit he would have loved to take part, despite not having the ideal build for it.

“I think you’ve got to have long legs like Ali [Williams] and be able to have a big stride to get through the mud, but obviously people like myself are not tall enough to do that so it takes a while to get through,” says Weepu.

It wasn’t all serious training though, Jerome Kaino even used the mud as war paint.

I realise you guys are up in Auckland, and that it's cheaper and easier to cover the Blues, but do we need an Ashlee Tulloch special on every single pre-season thing the Blues do? It's almost becoming her her gimmick. I also realise there's hardly anything to report on this time of year, and it's better to do a "real" story than a lame voice over about the NFL or whatever, but it's very, very, Blues-heavy, and Ashlee just isn't that interesting. Blonde woman ran through some mud. Whoopee.
