Bobby Brown was “point blank” the reason behind Whitney Houston’s “downfall”, alleges her friend David Gest.
The American concert promoter attended the late singer’s funeral on Saturday, alongside Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and Whitney’s The Bodyguard co-star Kevin Costner. The singer died in a Los Angeles hotel on Saturday February 11 aged 48.
David has blamed Whitney’s demise on her ex-husband Bobby, who has been largely held responsible for the star’s downfall.
The late singer battled drug addiction following her union with Bobby.
“I was very aware [of how troubled she was]. And the downfall was… she never did drugs prior to her marriage to Bobby [Brown]. She was this great movie star, this great beauty, this beautiful woman who people looked up to all over the world. He was a very bad influence on her and he was the downfall. It’s point blank. There is no other reason,” David Gest told BBC Breakfast.
David admits that Whitney had her own personal demons to battle with too. He believes the star never realised her full potential.
“I saw when she looked in the mirror; I don’t think she looked at herself as being beautiful, as being this great beauty of all time. I think she was insecure in that way, as so many people in show business are,” he said.
“She never felt she was really the talent that she was.”
David was devastated to find that Whitney had passed away. He will miss her deeply because of her beautiful nature.
“It was so sad because she died, not only so young, but all the memories of her started coming back to me – things we’d done over the years. I’d known her about 28 years and I met her through Michael Jackson. I was producing the American Cinema Awards and I needed an honouree for the next year. I needed a music honouree and Michael got her on the phone and said, ‘You want Whitney, here she is.’ I said, ‘Hi, would you do the show?’ She said yes and from then on we were friends for life,” he gushed.
“She was just an incredible human being.”
