Police hope to recover a body found floating in a West Auckland stream within the next two hours.

The body was spotted floating in the water off Millbrook Rd, Henderson this afternoon, Detective Senior Sergeant Stan Brown said.

Although it was floating close to the bank police were making sure nothing would interfere with pulling the body out.

The body was floating face down in the water and police cannot say whether it is a male or female, or what state the body was in, he said.

The scene has been cordoned off and about 12 police staff, including a scientist, were checking the bank.

Mr Brown said it was extremely steep, dropping about 8m down, and it was quite possible the person slipped down into the water.

Auckland police were aware of at least two missing people .

Mr Brown would not speculate whether the body could be that of missing Indian student Srikanth Rayadurgam.

Mr Rayadurgam, 23, was last seen on October 1. His wallet and some clothes were found the following morning on Westhaven Marina, about 20km away from where the body was found today.

His family fear he has been the victim of foul play.
