Police say a body which has been found washed up on an island off the coast of Australia could be the body of a missing New Zealand teenager.

A Queensland police spokeswoman has confirmed water police are at South Stradbroke Island where a body has been found around 5am (0800 NZ time) today.

The spokeswoman told AAP police believed it could be the body of 19-year-old Richard Doyle who has not been seen since telling his family he was going for a "quick swim" at Northcliffe, south of Surfers Paradise, on Monday morning.

His wallet and clothing were found on the beach the same day, sparking a land and sea search.
