Hundreds of office workers were evacuated in central Wellington on Wednesday after a suspicious package sparked a bomb scare.

The workers were told to leave the Plimmer Towers building, between Boulcott St and Lambton Quay, about 11am.

"They just said there was a suspicious package on the foyer on the fourth floor and we had to be evacuated," a woman who only wanted to be known as Margaret told NZ Newswire.

A police van, believed to contain members of the bomb squad was at the scene. Police had cordoned off the area around Plimmer Steps.

People were allowed to return to their offices about 11:50am.

A spokesman for police central communications said the delivered package was initially believed to be suspicious because of the way it was taped together.

However, it turned out to be harmless.
